For as long as I can remember, small purses were reserved for eveningwear. Several years ago, I saw small handbags grace the runway as well as celebrities. It got me thinking, is it okay to carry a clutch as an everyday accessory? I believe the answer lies in what you’re wearing, the type of purse, and your body shape.
What you’re wearing
If you’re in your sweats running errands, maybe a clutch is not exactly the choice. But doing day-to-day things in cute jeans and a silk tee definitely calls for a small handbag as an accessory. Go for a clutch with a long strap to give it a more daytime feel.
Certain fashion trends also call for specific bags. The rock n’ roll chic look just doesn’t feel right with an oversize handbag. But since it’s still a daytime look, a small bag with studs and chains is the perfect fit.
Going to the beach? A canvas tote with your favorite green peace slogan is a must. If you’re wearing a sleek one piece while chilling on a yacht, go for a more elegant choice: the fabric shoulder bag.
Type of purse
A wristlet is a perfect accessory for grabbing lunch or shopping with the girls. Fabric bags, regardless of size, are great daytime pieces as well. A croc skin clutch is obviously best reserved for the evening. To eliminate fuss, pick a bag with a detachable strap: shoulder bag for daytime, clutch for nighttime!
Fortunately, we are not as restrained by fashion rules as we used to be. Big bags can also be eveningwear. If I buy a large Chanel or Hermes bag, I will want to show it off at all the hottest nightclubs. This brings me to another point, the oversize clutch. Beautiful, sleek, rectangular. It is obviously meant for eveningwear regardless of its size.
Your body shape
Being a petite girl, I always feel swallowed up by an oversize bag. People always made jokes about my Marc Jacobs tote, I could easily fit into it myself. If you are lucky enough to have a few extra inches in height, a long strap bag could be your best friend (not mine, since it falls to my knees). Curvy girls need not worry! Your body shape alone is in style this season, no matter what bag you choose. Go for a moderate size purse, but avoid anything with bulky hardware.
We can never have too many purses, so pick up a few different sizes and you’re all set!
